Rob Franklin and Hilary Sheaff founded Walking Legends in 2003. We are both New Zealanders who are in love with, and inspired by, the New Zealand outdoors. It's been a source of enjoyment, employment and self development throughout our lives.

Our experience in tramping and guided walks in the New Zealand wilderness is combined with a huge amount of enthusiasm for, and knowledge of, New Zealand's natural environment and history.

Walking Legends' philosophy is to share this knowledge and experience in a friendly and personal way. Our aim as guides is to help others enjoy experiences such as ours in a safe and meaningful way. We have carefully assembled a small, highly dedicated team of legendary guides, who will ensure you have the time of your life on our walks!

Rob and Hils look forward to walking with you...

Tongariro Crossing Track Description

7-8 hours walking

Approx 7 - 8am pick-up from your Whakapapa or National Park accommodation. 20 minute drive to the start of the Tongariro Alpine Crossing.

Famously known as the world’s best walk, the Crossing is a challenging 7-8 hour hike through a rugged and exposed alpine environment.

The track runs through the Mangatepopo Valley (900m) to the saddle between Tongariro and Ngauruhoe Mountains. Two steep climbs lead to Red Crater (1886m), then a scree slope drops down to the vivid Emerald Lakes. After passing the Green and Blue lakes the track then sidles around the northern slope of Mount Tongariro, before the long descent of switch-backs and many steps to the end (600m).

Your transport awaits you at the end of the track, with a well-deserved snack and celebration drinks.

Approx 4pm return to your National Park or Whakapapa Village accommodation.

Walking Legends’ professional, all-inclusive service make this the easiest, most convenient and rewarding way to experience this life-altering hike. Caring and friendly guides will ensure you walk at a relaxed pace, so you can relish the jaw-dropping views, spectacular geology, incredible history & frequent refreshment breaks.

Your guide carry’s a first aid kit, communications, safety equipment and extra refreshments.

A reasonable level of fitness and agility is required for this guided walk. The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is a strenuous hike of 7-8 hours, with a climb and descent of around 1000 metres through an alpine environment. Walkers need to carry a daypack containing drinking water, raincoat and warm clothing. Track surfaces vary from well-formed paths to rough terrain of rocks and loose scree. Walking Legends guides are very experienced at guiding people of all ages and fitness levels, and are patient, caring and attentive to our walker’s needs. We have a low guide to client ratio and small groups, so everyone can receive our legendary personalised service. Please consult with us regarding children under 10 years of age

The Tongariro Alpine Crossing track is totally exposed to the weather, and is therefore very weather dependent. Blistering heat and freezing snow on the same day is not uncommon! We make a decision at 2pm every day, based on the latest weather forecast, as to whether we will attempt the Crossing the next day. If we deem it unsafe you will be offered an alternative walk or to attempt the Crossing on another day. If you do not partake in any walk then a full refund of any money paid will be provided. Even if the weather forecast is good, the weather in these mountains can change rapidly. If we need to turn around part way through the walk for any reason then there is no refund. The guide's main priority is safety and enjoyment, so please respect your guide's decisions. It is important that you are prepared for all types of weather conditions even in the height of summer. We provide a full list of clothing you need, and have thermals and raincoats you can borrow

What gear will I need?

You need a good pair of hiking shoes or boots and suitable hiking clothing - no jeans! Quick-dry shorts or trousers are ideal. Warm jersey, thermal layers, warm hat, sunhat & sunscreen, 2 litres drinking water and a camera. Raincoats, thermal layers, and day packs can be borrowed from us for free. A detailed equipment list will be provided on booking.
