The bird list for Ulva Island is extensive with a multitude of seabirds including penguin, wading birds, the flightless weka and kiwi, warblers, parrots and parakeets, native woodpigeon, saddlebacks, the delightful Stewart Island robin, fabulous songbird the tui and more...........many of them unfazed by visitor activities and happy to reveal themselves.

Ulva Goodwillie, your guide, who is named after the Island, is a direct descendant of the first Maori peoples of Stewart Island. She is passionate and very knowledgeable about this special place and would love to share it with you. An unforgettable experience, learning about native flora and fauna from a Maori and local Stewart Island perspective.

Ulva Island Guided Walk - Beautiful Birding and Botany (half day)

It's all about discovering - the unique, rare and endangered birds and plants at close quarters. Exquisite seasonal orchids, very friendly birdlife that will come too close for your camera lens...

We only have gentle ambles amongst a beautiful botanical forested garden alive with birdsong.

There is plenty of opportunity to stop for photographs but if you would prefer an exclusive tour catered to your needs we are happy to oblige.

We guarantee that you will love our Ulva Island - the southern-most bird sanctuary in the world!

Duration: 3½ to 4 hours which includes a 7 minute watertaxi ride to Ulva Island Bird Sanctuary
(flexible timing is needed when birdlife prevents overtaking on the tracks.... )
Departure point: We meet at GOLDEN BAY WHARF

October – April:
8.15am for an 8.30am departure - 12noon return
12:50pm for a 1:00pm departure - 4.30pm return

May – September:
9.15am for a 9.30am departure - 12.30 return

Port William Guided Walk "Bush – Birds – Beach – History" (half day)

This unique half day guided walk (4-5 hours) combines the best of what Stewart Island has to offer. Starting with a 20 minute water taxi to Port William, a historic Maori and early sealing site, you will have the opportunity to see a variety of seabirds.

Once arrived at Port William our guide will lead you along the coastline through native bush and you will hear the stories of early Maori and European settlers. The other facet of the guided walk is interpretation of the flora and fauna of Stewart Island as you walk through stunning scenery. A variety of native birds can be seen.

Ulva’s Guided Walks’ reputation for providing an unforgettable experience will make this walk a must for anyone staying on Stewart Island!

Outdoor activities take place in a dynamic, natural environment that can be challenging as well as rewarding - please be prepared. There is no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing.
