Description:
Ounuwhao
Bay of Islands B&B,
this hundred-year old, heart kauri homestead,
was shifted to Matauwhi Bay, Russell in April
1990. It has been faithfully restored as your
hosts home to give you the experience of our
historic Bed & Breakfast.
Ounuwhao is
right next to a grassed reserve bordered by
century-old Norfolk pines, opposite
picturesque Matauwhi Bay - a favourite
mooring-place for yachts. Ounuwhao is a
short two-minute drive or a casual 10-minute
stroll to Russell village.

You are offered
superior accommodation in four queen rooms,
two with extra single bed - all with en-suite
or private bathrooms.
The two front rooms feature their own
washstand and have French doors opening onto
the verandah and conservatory area, with sea
views.
All bathrooms are decorated with
old-fashioned, hand-painted 'Georgian' tiles
and have showers and toilets; two also have a
claw-footed bath.

Staying in the guestrooms will take you back
to a different era. With their individual
decor, traditional hand-made patchwork quilts,
brass beds, and fresh posies of flowers picked
from the garden to greet you on arrival.
Enjoy the comfortable lounge, with tea and
coffee available all day, television,
magazines, a wide selection of books and the
daily newspaper. Relax in the guest lounge or
enjoy a book or cup of tea on the
wide-sweeping verandahs, in the conservatory,
or surrounded by flowers in the cottage
garden.

Breakfast is served daily between 8.00 and
9.00 am in the dining-room. Sit around our
large farmhouse table and enjoy a home-cooked
breakfast which might include:
- fresh fruit
salad, home-made bread, muffins
- fresh orange
juice, sour cream and pear or orange
pancakes
- waffles with
peaches and passionfruit cream
- Ounuwhao's
special Russell toast with fresh fruits
and Greek yoghurt
- freshly
brewed tea and coffee, toast or toasted
muffin splits and home-made jams and
preserves
