‘The Peppertree’, a gracious 5-Star rated Edwardian-Villa built in 1901, is nestled quietly amid the world famous Marlborough wine region surrounded by 10 acres of farmland, vineyard, olive grove and beautiful gardens. It is the ideal base from which to tour the region or a treasured retreat where time stands still. The timeless feel of this beautiful hotel accommodation flows through into each of the five spacious guests suites, each individually decorated and complete with fireplace, verandah or balcony. You will enjoy the heritage feel along with the modern conveniences and above all, the personal touches we are able to offer.
Your day starts with a delicious breakfast in the elegant dining
room (or verandah). Stroll through the native trees, hear the birdsong,
enjoy a refreshing dip in the pool, a game of petanque or croquet.
On your arrival at the Peppertree, enjoy a ‘Welcome’ drink with appetizers along with our own olive oil on the wisteria clad verandah as the sun sets. Of course, be sure to sample ‘The Peppertree Chardonnay’, grown in the boutique vineyard just meters from the homestead and made by owner, Werner. This is a wonderful opportunity to speak to a passionate winemaker. For those who fancy a stroll, you can even enjoy a short tour with Werner to his beloved vineyard to learn more about our organic winegrowing practices. With a glass of wine in hand, you might well think you are in paradise!
The Guest Lounge & Dining Room
With Marlborough’s extensive range of restaurants, there is always somewhere different to dine, but guests are also welcome to enjoy the cuisine of The Peppertree (by prior arrangement) in the candlelit dining room or we can provide a platter for TWO. You can enjoy the evening in one of our garden’s lovely spots; enjoy local produce, homemade chutney and relish, walnuts and olives grown on the property and a glass of wine.
Guests are also always welcome to relax in the lounge with espresso coffee, a fine complimentary port or sherry complete with a good book and some classical music playing in the background.
Around the Gardens
The ten acres of grounds surrounding The Peppertree provide ample opportunity for Heidi and Werner to enjoy the agricultural pursuits that Marlborough is known for. Driving through the gate you pass the vineyard whose wine you'll be invited to enjoy at your arrival reception. You'll also sample the oil from The Peppertree's own olive grove and, when in season, pick and enjoy fresh Marlborough fruit from their very own orchard. Select a tab below to learn more.
Comfortable deckchairs are in the pool area.

Sheep in the paddock
Would you like to feed our sheep? They are very friendly and you can even take a photo – all, especially Bobby, are most photogenic.
Cob Cottage: historic museum built in 1860
Through the years the Cob Cottage has been used as a farm owner’s cottage, workers’ cottage, shearers’ quarters and was even home to the Riverlands School (1906-1909). The list of its uses even continues further – bookies’ headquarters, stud sheep shelter, Home Guard store and headquarters, storeroom and hay shed.
Cob Cottage was fully restored in the early 1960s, the mammoth project involving 5000 hours of mainly voluntary labour. In the last 40 years, general upkeep has been performed and now restoration continues to ensure this part of The Peppertree family remains for future generations to visit.
The Peppertree has five well appointed and beautifully detailed suites for guests, each with their own particular character and charm complete with fireplace, verandah or balcony. All of our rooms have direct dial ISDN telephone, a colour TV, fridge and mini-bar. Coffee and tea, home-baked cookies and fresh fruit, electric blankets, a nice selection of toiletries, a hairdryer and a high quality bathrobe are also provided. Wireless internet access is also available to our guests. Please select the tabs below to find out more about our suites.
