Complimentary Nature Activities
Each day the Wilderness Lodge offers two complimentary nature and farm trips...

These short trips provide a wonderful introduction to the ecology, wildlife and sheep farming activities on the Wilderness Lodge property. They are led by knowledgable local guides, last about an hour & a half and are included in the tariff of a Wilderness Lodge stay. These activities vary daily and typically happen in the morning or late afternoon.

The Wilderness Lodge Farm
A stay at Wilderness Lodge Arthur's Pass is a great opportunity to experience life on a working merino sheep farm...

On our complimentary Farm Discovery Trips you will see sheepdogs in action, hand feed lambs and learn about sheep shearing and merino wool. These trips run every second afternoon so if you stay two nights or more you will be able to join one of these special trips. Discovering the farm with a real farmer as a guide is a highlight for many visitors to the Wilderness Lodge. This is no tourist farm but an real working station home to 3000 sheep. Getting out to explore the Wilderness Lodge farm is very different to the auditorium sheep shows on offer in New Zealand's larger tourist destinations.

The Wilderness Lodge Farm was first settled in 1860 by the Goldney brothers and named Cora Lynn after a locality in the Dumfries district in their native Scotland. Originally 13,000 hectares (33,000 acres), much of the high mountain areas became part of neighbouring Arthur's Pass National Park and today it encompasses 2,400 hectares (6,000 acres) of the Upper Waimakariri Basin. The farm was once owned by New Zealand author David McLeod who wrote a delightful series of books chronicling early sheep farming life in Arthur's Pass. On returning from a farm visit you can settle into the Wilderness Lodge library with one of these books and see what has changed with farming life (and what remains the same).

Our programme of guided trips and a 30km network of walking trails across the property provides guests with a wealth of opportunities for exploring the farm and appreciating the rich cultural traditions of sheep farming in the New Zealand high country. Join a guide or explore on your own and if you see any farm work happening ask if you might lend a hand. Willing helpers are much appreciated.
