Pen Y Bryn Lodge Luxury Lodge Accommodation Oamaru
A Luxury award-winning boutique style hotel, Pen-y-bryn Lodge offers unrivalled visitor accommodation, fine dining and hospitality, thus earning the Lodge its growing international reputation.
As a 5-star honeymoon destination, relaxing retreat, romantic getaway, heritage inn, wedding location or for that extra special occasion, Pen-y-bryn Lodge provides guests the warmth and humour of famed South Island hospitality.
Guests gather in the evenings, warmed by blazing log fires to savour first-class table d'hôte cuisine. Attention to detail in the use of the freshest local organic produce teamed with New Zealand wines from a connoisseur wine cellar create an exceptional dining experience.
Choose from a wide variety of outdoor activities or simply indulge and relax at the Lodge, play billiards on the genuine slate table in the magnificently panelled billiard room, or curl up with a good book in the library.
Guests at Pen-y-bryn gather for cocktails and canapés in the evening, enjoying a sampling of lodge-made dishes that are sure to whet your appetite for a delicious meal to follow. Most of our guests choose to dine in for at least one of their nights with us (advance booking is essential) enjoying a "table d'hôte" meal, with your hosts preparing a menu using seasonal produce from our own gardens, or from local producers.
Evening Dining is a highlight, with guests seated together at one of three large tables with a blazing log fire in the background.
The blend of nationalities, ages and interests ensures convivial dining. However, honeymooning couples and other guests who prefer a more intimate setting for their meals are welcome to request a private dining room.
The candlelit table adorned with fresh flowers, sparkling crystal, crisp linen and polished silver add to the overall luxurious atmosphere.
Our menus tend to focus on the cuisines of the Mediterranean, especially France, Spain and Italy, but having lived and worked around the world, your hosts are pleased to offer an unparalleled range of dining experiences, and can cater to any taste, whether you prefer traditional New Zealand cuisine, using the finest local ingredients, or prefer to try something more unusual, whether it be authentic cuisine from East Asia, South America, North Africa or the Middle East.
Please advise us well in advance of any dietary restrictions you may have. We are happy to prepare vegetarian, gluten-free, or dairy-free menus on request. Please note that we do not offer dinner during the months of June and July!
James Glucksman and James Boussy (aka "the Jameses") are your hosts, having purchased Pen-y-bryn in 2010. Born in the United States, the Jameses have lived and traveled all over the world but have decided to make their home in Oamaru and are eager to show off their adopted home town to their guests.
Each guest room at Pen-y-bryn, with its personalised name and character, has been appointed to a high standard, with 100% cotton bed linen, 100% pure wool underlay, duvet and comfortable feather & down pillows. Monogrammed bathrobes and hand-embroidered face cloths add a personal touch. The rooms themselves are cosy rather than grand, and guests are encouraged to make use not only of their own room during their stay, but all the numerous public areas of the house.
A full range of quality New Zealand accessories, toiletries, hairdryers and valet amenities are available in each room. Guests can also enjoy herbal or traditional tea from a fine bone china tea service or a cup of freshly ground coffee with Lodge-baked biscuits, NZ chocolates or fresh fruit from their Butler's Tray. Furthermore, high-speed wireless broadband is available at no additional cost from all public areas and guest rooms, and each room is equipped with an iPod/iPhone dock, so you can listen to your own favourite music while relaxing in your room.
And of course, with cuisine such an important element of a stay at Pen-y-bryn, you will be treated to a beautiful breakfast in the morning, featuring lodge-made jams and marmalades (many made from our own fruits and berries), lodge-baked scones or muffins (or sometimes our "scuffins", which are a hybrid of the two!), and our bircher muesli with fresh fruits and Greek-style yogurt. If you have room, there are also free-range eggs, Havoc bacon, and home-made sausages. All this accompanied by T Leaf T teas or coffee roasted right here in Oamaru at Steam Café. Many of our guests forego lunch after enjoying our expansive breakfast!
