Your exclusive Wanaka accommodation is stylish and private, with attention to comfort and detail. In the evening lodge guests enjoy fine food and wine and a relaxed and convivial atmosphere. Nearby are two magnificent lakes, Lake Wanaka and Lake Hawea, and the renowned wilderness of Mt Aspiring National Park.

The Wanaka and Southern Lakes region is known for its unspoilt beauty and access to the outdoors; skiing and heliskiing, hiking, fishing and river or lake based adventure. Wanaka is a very special small resort town and an ideal place from which to explore some of the best that New Zealand has to offer.

The Lodge

Wanaka is a very special place and Riverrun offers an exceptional and beautifully designed accommodation from which to discover it. The lodge is set on an escarpment with unobstructed views of New Zealand's Southern Alps from every room. Designed by a local architect, the reclaimed hardwood timber and beams used in the lodge construction give the guest accommodation and living areas a sense of warmth, intimacy and history. Richly polished jarrah floors extend throughout both lounges, historic wharf timbers and massive railway beams show century old adze work. Handcrafted furniture and original metal balustrades and light fittings make this a superbly individual environment.

Guest accommodation at the lodge is uncluttered, spacious, comfortable and simply relaxing. The location assures you of calm and privacy. We can advise you on an active or adventurous stay, a special celebration or romantic retreat, or you may simply enjoy your surroundings and explore the trails that lead down to the river from the lodge. Our facilities include:

  • Two ground floor lounges each with roaring log fire and generous seating
  • Deep verandahs, all rooms have panoramic mountain views
  • Private outdoor cedar hot tub/spa
  • Guest tea/coffee making room with guest fridge stocked with complimentary refreshments, fresh fruit and home made cookies

Riverrun lies on the ancient terminal moraine of two glaciers, meeting at Halliday bluff. The property crosses the smaller Cardrona river and bounds the magnificent Clutha river, New Zealand's largest river. The farm was originally the "river run block" of a much larger sheep "run." It was first developed by the Halliday brothers, who were suppliers and prospectors during the Cardrona goldrush of the 1880's.

John and Meg had made many excursions to Wanaka and at the end of a hiking trip in Mt Aspiring National Park in 1995, took the not-difficult decision to move here. John had previously established the successful retail and manufacturing outdoor clothing and equipment company Kathmandu, in both New Zealand and Australia. Over the next eighteen months, John and Meg purchased this amazing property, began construction of the lodge using chiefly recycled timber, and set about improving the 500 acre farm. Riverrun lodge opened in 1997, at that time one of only a few individually and architecturally designed boutique lodges in New Zealand. Walks, bike and running trails extend from the lodge along the Clutha, Cardrona and Hawea rivers for 10-20kms. It is a beautiful 10km ride along the Clutha river and lakeside track to Wanaka township. Guests can enjoy the benefit of local advice, walks along the escarpment, riverside rides or picnics or simply take in the valley and mountain views from the lodge verandahs. The property is a fine wool merino sheep farm, with some cropping for stock feed. The region is one of the main fine wool growing areas in the country, producing 14-18 micron merino fleece as well as merino bred lamb
