About Stewart Island
Stewart Island is New Zealandís third-largest island. Lying just 30km south of the south island, most of its land mass is protected within Rakiura National Park, making it a haven for native flora and fauna. The islandís scenery is truly magnificent. Densely forested hills descend directly to a coastline of rocky outcrops and deserted golden beaches. The sky frequently blazes with colour at dawn and dusk, giving rise to the islandís Maori name Rakiura Ė land of the glowing skies.

With New Zealandís largest accessible population of native birds, Stewart Island is a birding enthusiastís paradise. Stewart Island Lodge has an extensive garden and its grounds are home to many native birds, including kaka (native parrots) which can be viewed from the terrace.

Enjoy a leisurely cruise of beautiful Paterson Inlet Cruise including a visit to renowned wildlife sanctuary Ulva Island accompanied by a nature guide. The island is home to weka (native woodhen), bush robins, rare saddlebacks and yellowheads amongst other species. Ulva Island is also a protected habitat for some of New Zealandís rarest plant species.

Stewart Island guided walkers can now experience first hand the battle against introduced predators by helping carry out vital control work during the two-hour excursion. Tourism operator Stewart Island Experience is donating $5 from each adult booking on its guided walks to the Stewart Island/Rakiura Community Environment Trust (SIRCET). Guided walkers learn about the projects SIRCET is undertaking and also get the chance to check rat and possum traps along the way.

Stewart Island has one small village (Oban), which is home to approximately 400 people. The village has a general store, a small museum, craft shops, cafes and restaurants. There is a wide range of activities available on Stewart Island, ranging from guided tours to exploring independently by rental car. We are happy to offer our local advice and book activities in advance for you - simply complete the form on our contact us page.

Stewart Island Experience operates a range of tours and cruises - including Paterson Inlet Cruises (including Ulva Island), Village & Bays Tours, Marine Nature Cruises and Rental Services.
