LAKE MOERAKI WILDERNESS LODGE - A WARM WELCOME TO TE WAHI POUNAMU WHERE THE TASMAN SEA AND ITS PENGUINS MEET THE ANCIENT RAINFOREST

Moeraki River and Lodge

From Lake Moeraki Wilderness Lodge spectacular beaches that are home to fur seals and crested penguins, untouched lowland rainforests spread between pristine lakes and rivers which drain the snow capped Southern Alps. Few places on earth can match the unique natural setting of the Wilderness Lodge Lake Moeraki in the heart of the 2.7 million hectares South West New Zealand World Heritage Area, Te Wahi Pounamu ( Maori translation: the place of greenstone jade)

Husband and wife owners, teacher Anne Saunders and biologist Dr. Gerry McSweeney arrived at Lake Moeraki (Maori translation: "to sleep by day") in 1989 from Wellington where Gerry was director of New Zealand's largest environmental organisation. They set up Lake Moeraki Wilderness Lodge to help protect the rainforests and share this extraordinary natural setting with visitors.

Lake Moeraki Wilderness Lodge is landscaped in a lakeside clearing surrounded by 1000 year old rainforest trees. Lake Moeraki Wilderness Lodge offers a high level of comfort in attractive Lodge rooms (all rooms have private bathrooms) with lounges and restaurant that overlook the lovely Moeraki rapids. A relaxed drink and meal in the tranquil Moeraki Lounge at Lake Moeraki Wilderness Lodge you watch the river roll by, native birds and trout jumping is a wonderful tonic in a hectic world.

Radiating from Lake Moeraki Wilderness Lodge is a network of rainforest and Tasman seacoast walks. There is a fleet of canoes for you to explore Lake Moeraki and the Moeraki river. A team of guides from Lake Moeraki Wilderness Lodge will introduce you to crested penguins, fur seals, giant tame eels and New Zealand's unique birdlife and ancient forests.

Sally Lilley and John Holton are the managers at Lake Moeraki Wilderness Lodge and have a team of enthusiastic young New Zealanders keen to share their Wilderness with you. Anne and Gerry still own Lake Moeraki Wilderness Lodge and they visit frequently to help and keep in daily contact. They are now managing their new Wilderness Lodge at Arthurs Pass in the heart of the Southern Alps, a day's drive from Lake Moeraki Wilderness Lodge

LAKE MOERAKI WILDERNESS LODGE - SUPERB FOOD, WINE AND COMFORT

Moeraki restaurant

The surroundings are untouched but Wilderness Lodge Lake Moeraki itself offers every comfort to help the weary traveller to relax after an active day outdoors.

Early Maori camped here to gather eels, whitebait, freshwater mussels and birds. This historic link was recognised by the 1998 creation of a small Historic Reserve across the river from Lake Moeraki Wilderness Lodge. The reserve is managed by Ngai Tahu, the main South Island Maori tribe.

From 1962 onwards, the Lake Moeraki Wilderness Lodge site was the main construction camp for the Haast Highway - New Zealand's last major road construction. At its heart was the historic “Red Dog Saloon” - illegal bar for the road workers - which in 1965 achieved national notoriety. A police raid closed the bar and arrested the occupants who received stiff fines at a widely publicised court hearing in Hokitika.

You can experience the original Red Dog Saloon at the heart of the Lake Moeraki Wilderness Lodge but it is now surrounded by new buildings, landscaped into a clearing in the rainforest along the banks of the Moeraki river.

Garden room

There are 18 modern Lake Moeraki Wilderness Lodge rooms, each with private facilities that each sleep 2 and 8 larger Garden rooms.

Lawns sculptured down to the river's edge where there are jumping trout, water birds and stunning reflections give the Riverside Restaurant and Moeraki Lounge one of this country's finest restaurant views.

Here you can relax, read, try a drink from our excellent wine cellar and enjoy great wilderness food. Whitebait from the river, seafood from the coast, game from the forest and delicious vegetables and fresh fruit are our speciality.

Every evening we offer a special activity: - recreate the pioneering days with the locals, a short walk to see glow worms and the Southern Cross or short talks on penguins and the rainforest. Around the log fire you will make new friends and learn about New Zealand its people as you plan your next day's adventures.

Wilderness Seacoast, Fiordland Crested Penguin and New Zealand Fur Seals Tramping Adventure
This is a dramatic and challenging wet footed walk. It involves wildlife viewing, scrambling over beach rocks and along beaches and, at the end, a 400 foot steep hill climb.

Wilderness Seacoast, Hector's Dolphin, Rainforest, Tree Fern and Gold miners Walk
There is a huge variety on this walk; a lovely seacoast rich in rock pools, greenstone, Hector's dolphins (the worlds smallest dolphin) and occasionally New Zealand Fur Seals. Magnificent rimu, beech and kahikatea rainforest and a historic gold miner's path that traverses fern filled river gorges.

Easy canoeing

Lake Moeraki Canoe Safari to Glacier Beach and The Giant Rimu Trees
Our nature guides give you instruction in our safe, stable, and small or large canoes. We then paddle upriver past tall rainforest to enter the shallow wetlands of Lake Moeraki.

Ancient Rainforest Guided Walk and Canoe Safari to the Lower Moeraki River and the Tasman Seacoast
Option A: Easy - Canoe the Moeraki Lagoon Our nature guides take you on a 30 minute walk down the valley through giant rainforest trees, past some historic cottages and across freshwater springs and wetland moss forest. At the Moeraki lagoon our canoes and life jackets are waiting. We paddle down river beneath the forest and out into the Moeraki lagoon.

Option B: Moderate - Hard - Canoe the Moeraki Rapids
This trip is only suitable for people who are fit/experience canoeists/good swimmers. Although the rapids are easy, trees in the river create some objective hazard. Our nature guides instruct you in down river canoeing in front of the wilderness Lodge. We practice navigation and procedures for descent. We reach the Tasman beaches and walk to the Tasman seacoast where we enjoy refreshments and fossick for gemstones, shells and driftwood and look for Hector's dolphin, the world's smallest.

The Moeraki Mountains, Historic South Westland Pack Track, Moeraki Rapids and Blue Hut The Moeraki valley was the last valley in South Westland to be accessed by road in 1965. Prior to this the only way south to Haast by land followed a historic pack track at the foot of the mountains. We drive 8 km up the valley to the start of this walk. The track crosses a series of small steams as the noise of the Moeraki rapids grows louder. When we reach these spectacular rapids, we cross on a high swingbridge then walk for 15 minutes to Blue Hut. We enjoy lunch either at the hut with a roaring fire and billy tea or beside a huge pool in the Moeraki River.

TROUT FISHING
The lake and rivers have good numbers of Brown Trout and in March & April Quinnat Salmon. The lodge has basic rods with lures but NO fly-fishing equipment. Local guides can be arranged with notice but please check with us if fishing is to be the focus of your stay at the lodge. You cannot fish in front of the Lodge where we have giant tame brown trout.

LAKE MOERAKI WILDERNESS LODGE - A NATURAL EXPERIENCE

Tasman seacoast

Lake Moeraki Wilderness Lodge have been pioneers in showing that it is possible to protect New Zealand's ancient rainforest from logging but through nature tourism create employment and boost small communities.

The forests, mountains, rivers and wildlife around Lake Moeraki were protected in 1991 within the South West New Zealand Te Wahi Pounamu World Heritage site. This covers 2.7 million hectares of more than 10% of New Zealand's total land area. It extends from Westland/Mt. Cook National Parks to the southern coast of Fiordland National Park. Its creation was spearheaded by Gerry McSweeney and the Forest and Bird Society. $2 million was spent by the New Zealand Government between 1990 and 1996 to build an attractive network of walks and visitor centres so that visitors can discover the delights of the Haast - Moeraki region. In doing so you are benefiting the economy of our small communities.

Lake Moeraki Wilderness Lodge is committed to the protection of the environment. We run our own 37KW hydro-electric generator for all power, have an active energy efficiency program, recycle all possible rubbish and work in partnership with the Conservation Department who administer the surrounding World Heritage rainforests.

From the Lake Moeraki Wilderness Lodge we are also gathering scientific information on seals, penguins, plants, birds, earthquakes and rainfall to help in the future management and protection of this area.

You are invited to explore our tracks, canoe on Lake Moeraki and join our nature guides for journeys of discovery in one of the most wild and natural places left on earth.
