The New Zealand bed & breakfast description covers a multitude of types of types and styles of accommodation, from the traditional bed & breakfast to purpose built modern accommodations, below is an explanation of some of the styles. Generally 4 or 6 rooms.
Traditional
Accommodation in private homes with the owners, where guests usually have a separate guest lounge, ensuite (private) bathrooms and other guest spaces, usually up to 6 guest bedrooms
Bed and Breakfast Hotels
Larger properties with usually up to 12 bedrooms, again with guests having their own spaces, likely that rooms will start to have some basic hotel features such as phones in rooms, televisions and their may be in house dining or a small bar for guests use.
Bed and Breakfast Inns
Similar to B&B hotels, again hosted with guests having their own spaces
Boutique Accommodation, Hotels and Lodges
Hosted properties usually of a higher standard with extra touches
Lodges
Bed & breakfast lodges are generally of a high standard architecturally, in special settings and offer dinner as a separate service.
Over recent years the term Lodges has been associated with many different types of accommodation, on this website Lodges are treated as a separate category, they are generally the best accommodations available, stunning settings, offer full services, still hosted but may be by the owners or managed, service is usually dinner, bed & breakfast. Homestays and Farmstays
Normally smaller accommodations catering to 2 to 4 guests at one time, generally guests share the owners spaces,
they may or may not have ensuite (private) bathrooms.
Country Homes
Any of the categories listed above in a country setting, usually not far from
the nearest village or town.
Historic Homes
Properties that have a New Zealand historic places listing as being either
architecturally or historically significant. There are quite a number of
properties that are not listed but still significant.
