The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is a challenging one-day alpine trek which covers a little over 19.4km (12 miles) and encounters a varied range of landforms and views. This track passes through areas of fascinating geology and is of great cultural significance, as it heads up and over Mt Tongariro. The direction that we walk this track makes good sense, climbing some 776m (or 2528ft), but descending a total of 1126m (or 3716ft)!
Whilst challenging this is one of the best walks in New Zealand an excellent day walk and very rewarding, we strongly recommend that walkers use the services of a professional guide from Tongariro Guided Walks, conditions can change during the day and walking with a guide adds safety and their local knowledge to ensure you get the best experience from your day.
