To the tangata whenua, the Original People of the Land, Whirinaki rainforest was a pharmacy, a supermarket and an abundant source of valuable building materials – everything required to sustain life. Kai [food] and rongoa [medicine plants] in abundance were found within these ancient woodlands but conservation of resources was paramount.
Today the descendants of these ancient tribespeople are still able to harvest selected resources from the rainforest, but they strictly observe the tikanga [protocols and traditions] set down by their ancestors. Today’s kaiarahi [guides] willingly share their knowledge of these traditional uses and share the secrets of this special place.
