Blenheim is located on the river plains of the Wairau and Opawa Rivers. The high sunshine hours and free draining soils produce some of the countries finest Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay wines, excellent Cabernet, Merlot and recently maturing Pinot Noir. The area west of the town towards Renwick has a fine collection of wineries that are signposted for a self-guided wine tasting trail, these include well-known labels such as Cloudy Bay, Stoneleigh and Villa Maria. One of the largest producers, Montana, is situated beside State Highway 1 just south of the town.
You can participate in escorted wine tours for an insight into the wine production and sampling of regional varieties. Tours are also available that combine wine tasting with a Greenshell Mussel Cruise on the inner Pelorus and Kenepuru Sounds for a full day excursion. The town of Blenheim is the commercial centre of the province and, as such, has all major town services and dining opportunities.
Picton is an attractive harbour located at the head of the Queen Charlotte Sound that has the deep waters needed to provide access for the inter-island ferries. Picton has most services including banking, post office, restaurants, and a range of retail outlets. Picton also has marina berths for recreational yachts and for water taxi services. Multi-day Kayaking and Hiking Trips taking in the Queen Charlotte Sound and Walkway also depart from Picton.
Connecting Picton and Havelock by road (35kms) is the picturesque Queen Charlotte Drive that passes some attractive sheltered bays including Momorangi Bay (14kms from Picton) here you will find a beach and grassed areas suitable for swimming and picnicking, a small shop, jetty, and toilet facilities. Heading further towards Havelock there is a short section of land-locked road that passes through Linkwater (23kms west of Picton) where to the north - a side road leads to Anakiwa (4 kms). From Anakiwa hikers can walk part, or all of, the Queen Charlotte Track, (three days one way for the full trip), or as little as half a day return from Anakiwa to experience a very pleasant section.
