Wanaka, set on the shore of beautiful Lake Wanaka in Central Otago has mountain and water vistas that change from one beautiful season to the next. Summer is always a great time to visit with long days, plenty of fine weather and the lake to enjoy. Autumn has its own magic as the poplar and other deciduous trees turn to gold, with a dusting of snow on the peaks of the Mount Aspiring National Park that defines the ridgelines. Winter is the time to head to the ski fields at nearby Cardrona and Treble Cone before returning to Wanaka for some apres ski relaxation in front of a cosy log fire, a soak in a hot tub, wining and dining in town, or perhaps a sumptuous meal provided at lodge accommodation.

Central Otago has burgeoning wine industry with the variety and quality of its wines going from strength to strength. With large quantities of vines having been planted in recent times around the Lake Dunstan area located 30 minutes from Wanaka.

A number of excellent walking trails - from 30 minutes upwards - can be accessed from your Wanaka base. An excellent walk to a viewing point for the Rob Roy Glacier is located approximately 1 hour from Wanaka by taking the road along the scenic Matukituki Valley followed by a hike of around 3 1/2 hours total return - allow all day for the Wanaka/Wanaka return trip with a picnic lunch. (Some uphill sections - good footwear and moderate fitness required).p

The Wanaka area is popular for hiking, golf, mountain biking, fly fishing and of course skiing and snowboarding in winter.

Eco Wanaka Rob Roy Glacier

Just 1 hour from Wanaka is the beautiful Mt Aspiring National Park. Within the park is the Rob Roy Glacier. It is a massive glacier beginning high above on Rob Roy Peak 2,606 metres, clinging to the ever-steepening mountainside as it descends into the Rob Roy Valley occasionally dropping off in chunks off the cliffs opposite our lunch spot, spectacular and noisy!
